As Hogwarts Legacy looms large on the celestial horizon , many are still wondering what the tone of the game will be . The Wizarding World exists in shades of gray with splendid burst of light-colored characters and equally grim characters . However , in those hoar areas , " full " characters can use the Dark Arts . Should this carry over into a title center on school - age children ? Should execution be an alternative for thespian ? have ’s utter about it .
The Dark Arts
In the Wizarding World , there is n’t so much of a Dark Side or Light Side that we ’re used to , like in something like Star Wars . There is , however , a set of enchantment known as the Dark Arts . These are traditionally spells or acts that would harm , control , or even outright pour down living beings . These actions range from brewing dark potions to breed dingy animate being to using the disallow Unforgivable Curses .
To practice the Dark Arts is to impart pieces of one ’s soul in interchange for major power . The more one partakes in the Dark Arts , the more their physical appearance could be marred , and the more their soul would be rent asunder . It was his continued pursuit of the Dark Arts that deform Tom Riddle into Voldemort .
The point I ’m sample to make with this is that there are serious repercussions to practicing the Dark Arts , and they are n’t something that schooltime - age kid would be practice . Using these spells also requires serious purport to harm or kill the intended dupe . That requires serious bailiwick that , arguably , many small fry lack .
So , speaking from a lore view , if it were something the developer need to tally , it would n’t make gumption to have children in middle or high school using the Dark Arts with any sorting of ease . Sure , you had Tom Riddle , but he practiced for yr and mostly in arcanum . You ca n’t reasonably expect to be popping off spells like the Cruciatus Curse the right way before go to potions course of study .

The Paragon and the Renegade
When I think of immersive RPGs where pick come into play , I suppose of titles like Knights of the Old Republic , Fable , and Mass Effect . Each had a morality organization where players could lean into being the good or bad guy . These would affect their appearance , the action available to them , and how the world perceived them .
While it would be interesting to have a kind of morals scheme in place , I do n’t think a game center on around Hogwarts is the place for it . If it were a narrative revolve around more mature wizards and hag out in the large world , then utterly . rent me make a character and see them become disfigure due to my ill-treatment of the Dark Arts . Alternatively , let me ready protection spells against the Dark Arts and use my magic trick to help NPC .
However , and this is the crux of the matter of it , these are schoolhouse - eld children . They do n’t have a grasp on their own identity element , lease alone the power to pursue a course that will strictly test their ethical motive . So no , I do n’t cerebrate using the Dark Arts should be available to the player regularly . If anything , it could be attempt in a polar aspect with serious repercussions .

Again , I ’m not against a Dark Arts playthrough , but Hogwarts Legacy is n’t the secret plan for it . These are children that their families and wise man have shaped to be the best reading of themselves . The coursework in school would involve Defense Against the Dark Arts , not practical uses of the Dark Arts . There are games where this would crop , but Hogwarts Legacy is n’t .
The Player
The bigger question is n’t whether children wizards and witches be using the Dark Arts , but instead , should child players ? Sure , many players will be adults , but a multitude of small fry will also roleplay the game . It ’s a thin-skinned subject involving parents and guardians being civilize and involved in their youngsters ' gametime . It ’s why the ESRB was found and why game ratings are a thing .
As a father to a younger tiddler , I do n’t desire him play thing with a moody tone , egregious wildness , or straight - up slaying . He ’s a kid and should n’t have to see that variety of stuff . The world is a jolting , dark place already . There ’s no point in taking aside that innocence too soon .
That ’s where Hogwarts Legacy falls into a weird spot . Who is the intended audience ? It would appear to be teenager as the friend are roughly that age . However , a large adult hearing is more than likely to latch onto the deed of conveyance . The first Harry Potter book was let go in 1997 , and the first picture rack up theaters in 2001 . The bulk of that initial audience is now in their late XX to early XL .

While adults would be able-bodied to handle the darker motif and delight a moral conflict , it ’s something that would be too much for children . So again , Hogwarts Legacy is n’t the deed of conveyance for darker themes and murder . Will there ever be a Wizarding World form of address that is definitely gear toward adults ? That ’s unlikely as the publishing company stand to make more money if there ’s a across-the-board appeal . It ’s the inauspicious nature of the beast .

The Batman Solution
This is where Batman swoops in to relieve the solar day . It ’s a fine line to take the air . The Wizarding World emphatically has a grim side to it , and Hogwarts Legacy will comprise some of those theme . There are pass to be wizards and beldam that practice the Dark Arts that our player will come into opposition with . It ’s the framing that allows the armed combat and on - screen door violence to act .
In Star Wars , the rationality that Stormtroopers wear helmets is to twist them into faceless opposition . It hit differently when droves of the identical foe are cut down with a lightsaber instead of unique people with human faces . With Batman , it ’s why he either fight larger - than - life baddie or nameless thugs in dark alleys . Neither register as real humans to the consultation .
So , with dark witches and wizards , we can gestate them to either be larger - than - life baddie , non - human , or mask - wearer like the Death Eaters . Regarding combat and on - screen wildness , we can await spells that disarm or disable rather than those that make serious harm or death . Batman does n’t kill humans . Neither will our character in Hogwarts Legacy .

The Wizarding World definitely walks a o.k. line between being small fry favorable and cut into into dour themes . It ’s why the Harry Potter series bulge out relatively light - hearted but grew darker as the characters fetch honest-to-goodness . It ’s why Fantastic Beasts and Where to chance Them started as a fantastical story , only to be maligned by a dour story slip the name .
I would love an adult Wizarding World title . I want to see the report go beyond the walls of Hogwarts . I conceive there is so much untapped potentiality being nurse down by the greed of studios . I have no idea if Hogwarts Legacy will be good or bad . It ’s had a disruptive start thanks to the large world ’s creator and their controversial opinions . What I cognize is that it ’s not a game where children playing children should be murdering digital adversaries with taboo magic .
