What could have been .

Survival horror is on a revival thanks to series like Resident Evil , Silent Hill , and Dead Space stool return with sequels or remake . But with juggernauts like those still playing in the field , how does a newcomer like The Callisto Protocol stand up ? Helmed by a new studio on a unexampled engine , it certainly has a lot to turn up .

Narrative

player take control of fender Jacob Lee as he is about to result the Black Iron Prison on the moon of Callisto . Jacob and his partner have been run cargo out of the prison for a little while now with the promise of one last chore being enough to crawl in . Meanwhile , in the Jovian system of rules where Jacob operates , a terrorist arrangement has been propagate a bioweapon on moons like Europa . When the supposed drawing card of the terrorist attacks Jacob ’s ship , it crashes back on Callisto , where he and the leader , Dani are imprisoned . Shortly after waking up in a cell , Jacob finds that all hell has broken loose and must find a way off Callisto .

If you ’ve played the original Dead Space , you ’ll have a moderately good idea of what ’s befall in The Callisto Protocol . The larger narration measure are almost directly ripped from the aforementioned deed . It ’s not awful , but it ’s certainly not animate . It ’s largely predictable , from the fiber and their motivations to the larger plot spot . It ’s disappointing , to say the least .

The story of a prison house dodging but sic the stage for vague organizations , conspiracies , and a predictable source of the monster that plague Black Iron Prison . The majority of the narrative is put on grip in the first half as Jacob must navigate the prison like a lost puppy . It ’s about midway in that a prominent exposition shit come about in the form of several short holographical projections . By the time this occurs , most players should have figured out what is going on .

When it come to seeing the latter one-half play out , it ’s just that . There ’s no emotional fastening to any fictional character , no real desire to see any of them escape , and nothing that keep the story from being full of tropes . The Callisto Protocol had a hazard to do something young and superb here , but instead , it prefer to put a coat of paint on an old project .

Visuals and Performance

The one thing that The Callisto Protocol does right wing is in the ocular department . From the perpetually sweating Jacob to the horrifically mutated con and the dismal hallways of Black Iron Prison to the desolate landscape painting of Callisto , it ’s all a fiesta for the eye . There are particular abound in nearly every expression of The Callisto Protocol , and it really deform the baron of the underlying Unreal Engine 5 .

That being said , The Callisto Protocol also ran attractively on the PlayStation 5 . In our dozen hours playing the title , we only experienced one random clank , which gratefully did n’t result in any bewildered advance . Everything ran at a steady framerate and there was n’t so much as a drop or stammer , no matter how much chaos was happening onscreen .

Gameplay

Much like the storey , the gameplay is where The Callisto Protocol suffers . The problem is double : the bulk of the gameplay is lifted from Dead Space and the game is very clunky in terms of play . Only two notable differences part The Callisto Protocol from Dead Space . The first is that there is much more stress on melee combat and the second is that it is n’t all important to shoot off the limb of enemies .

That being said , the rest is pretty much the same . Jacob must happen schematics for weapons to craft them , he uses a GRP . GRP is a miserable copy of Dead Space ’s Kinesis organization , blare tentacle replaces cutting off arm , stomping enemy yields loot , and Jacob ’s vitals are expose via holographic indicators on his back .

It ’s not so much that the gameplay is uninventive as it ’s very poorly done compared to Dead Space , which did it all better 14 yr ago . The GRP is short - lived and does n’t have the same mechanics as impaling foe with spikes or other environmental weapons . sure enough , there are spiked walls and sports fan , but that ’s about it . The GRP is n’t even used in puzzle solving , a huge waste chance .

Found audio logs do n’t automatically wreak as they did in Dead Space , which lock the player in a carte and takes them out of the game . Swapping weapon is an absolute pain as it takes several push button public press and leaves Jacob vulnerable to attack . Healing dead can not be done when in fight due to the long , interruptable animation . The robotlike recharge of the GRP does n’t work properly , which force musician to frantically enter their stocktaking and start a battery , all while hop enemies do n’t get a tinny shot in . at long last , all reloading must be done manually which open up the thespian to great deal of cheap shots when trying to action a spry blast only to have the grease-gun goclick .

escape is a large mechanic that ultimately falls flat . Players must support the unexpended parallel peg in one direction as the flack is come and alternative sides with each attack . It ’s not an awful system except for the inability to read attacks properly . This results in simply support the stick in alternate direction on the off chance the enemy was n’t done flailing around .

It ’s all so crude . What complicates this is that , even on the easiest trouble go down , The Callisto Protocol is an absolutely brute game that will keep players perpetually low on resource . So , it does n’t help when players are force to fight the controls and car-mechanic as much as they are the actual enemies in the game .

Features

There are n’t features so much as there is a want of features . Many unmarried - thespian games in this coevals and those previous ones include some sort of New Game+ option or chapter blue-ribbon . This is n’t the case in The Callisto Protocol . Players are strapped in and must complete a playthrough from get-go to goal , and once done , that ’s it . There ’s no rolling over a save into a new playthrough , no upgrades to attend forward to if you ’re at the end , and no style to go back and grab things you may have miss .

It ’s a baffling decision that kills any and all replay time value . for sure , you’re able to play back it on a higher difficulty , but for what ? Unless you ’re playing on the highest difficulty for the Trophy , there ’s nothing to gain . There ’s nothing in the way of surreptitious conclusion or anything of issue conceal in the background , so why would participant go through it again ?

Upgrades are limited to weapon and the GRP . Jacob only gets one suit in the game , which ca n’t be upgraded . Due to the unmarried playthrough design , players must pick one or two weapons to fully promote and ignore the quietus due to how limited resources are . It ’s just regretful design all around .

Verdict - Missed Opportunities

I hate to say it , I really do . I love survival horror , and I was genuinely delirious about The Callisto Protocol . It arrest some of my favorite gifted histrion and looked gorgeous . But once at heart , I found that it was just a wan imitation of a biz that egress over a decade ago . With that being said , it ’s a good thing The Callisto Protocol came out before the Dead Space remake because if that sticks the landing ( it does n’t even ask to be mind - blowing ) , it will blow The Callisto Protocol out of the water .

Here was an opportunity to do something bold and new with a fresh IP . or else , it was squandered , rehash ideas we ’ve already seen explore and to much better effect . If you still have any interest in playing , I extremely advise waiting for it to go on sale . It ’s certainly not deserving the full price of admission in its current state . That being say , if even a Modern Game+ modal value was add together , that would make the biz boundlessly better just by adding instant replay time value . But for now , store your money .
