Boy , oh boy … The price of nostalgia is steep .
While Final Fantasy VII is a home name in the JRPG community , Crisis Core : Final Fantasy VII is less known but every bit dear to FFVII fan . It explores the events before the iconic FFVII and leads up some of the greatest storytelling in gaming . However , we found the execution of this remake could have been unspoiled in some domain , chiefly concerning gameplay . Despite this , for those who enjoy the account of Final Fantasy VII , Crisis Core Final Fantasy VII Reunionis deserving know .
Visuals
Crisis Core Final Fantasy VII Reunion provides an HD facelift to what were already pretty good graphics . This gives Zack Fair an update look , and he has never looked better ( except for maybe that brief appearance in FF7R ) . But this update stretches across the total game to mild success . While the models themselves front good , there is a jankiness that detracts from the optical upgrade that Square Enix hand Crisis Core . This becomes extremely noticeable with the in - game engine and characters talk to one another .
Opposite of this , the cutscenes are render fantastically and attend like my childhood memories of the original Crisis Core do , but even better . This starkly counterpoint the in - plot sequences , which look so stiff and innocent of life . I found myself skipping any non - crucial cutscene or just looking off because of how unfit they were . While the locations look stunning , they are extremely linear and devoid of any life , appearing like set piece or stock ikon rather than an literal surround . Walking through Banora Village or Midgar makes this painfully obvious . So few of the background elements move , it ’s as if the world is block in clip , and only Zack can move freely .

Story
Crisis Core ’s news report is largely its greatest asset , and Crisis Core Final Fantasy VII Reunion continue that custom . The story hits even harder knowing the upshot of Final Fantasy VII . You get an unstoppable train ride to a fate that shakes up the cosmos of Final Fantasy VII and all those in it everlastingly . Zack Fair may have been a side character casually mentioned in Final Fantasy VII , but he could easily be seen as one of the major driving points alongside Cloud , Aerith , and Sephiroth in this title .
Crisis Core keep abreast Zack and his goal to arise from SOLDIER Second Class to SOLDIER First Class . This would put the eager and gay soldier at the level of legend such as Genesis , Angeal , and Sephiroth . However , everything has a price , and Zack ’s pipe dream of becoming a hero has a shadow . This shadow is hidden at the commencement of the game , but each fundamental interaction with Angeal , Sephiroth , Aerith , Cloud , and Genesis reveals more and more of what awaits our champion . Crisis Core Final Fantasy VII Reunion establish how tenuous the line between the path of right and wrong can be , and it is one that Zack finds himself walking throughout the game . This delicate equilibrium maintain me glue to the chronicle from the very beginning until the very destruction .

Gameplay
Nostalgia and story away , Crisis Core Final Fantasy VII Reunion could be more fun to play . From its insistent fight to its extremely running degree , this remaking show its age with picayune update to a modern biz . fighting can easily become frustrating due to the unresponsive scheme , irksome combat , and seemingly random challenge . elude requires support still or finishing an onslaught , which has a lot of lag on them , often leaving you open to attack . The combat involves mashing the same button and now and again using Materia .
Then you have the entropy of it all . The Digital Mind Wave ( DMW ) and Limit Break organization seem fun , but it ’s random to the point where I reach a Limit Break almost five time in a single fight but did n’t get it for the next ten or more battle . combine this with how sometimes you have ample sentence to clear an foe ’s Break Point while others are unbreakable outside of a lucky Limit Break , and it cursorily becomes frustrating . moreover , these unbreakable points can result in crying putting to death attack , and some enemies even straight up have Death abilities that kill you in one hitting . As a result , I wanted to avoid combat whenever possible until I broke the plot with knock-down combo , which restored some of the play for me .
to boot , outside of combat , thing are pretty much the same . floor are farseeing corridor where you run from tip A to stage B , plight in too many short random combat , watch several unneeded cutscenes that could have been explained in one , then repeat . Without the appeal of love for Final Fantasy VII and the fond memories of the original Crisis Core , I doubt I would have been able to advertise through this dated remake .

Music
Final Fantasy VII has some of the best music , and Crisis Core Final Fantasy VII Reunion continue this custom . Anytime The Price of Freedom played , I was immediately in my feels or felt my adrenaline pumping any time the combat music kick in . Crisis Core Final Fantasy VII Reunion just sounds majuscule in all regards . The soundtrack is wide-ranging but still retains a report across all its tracks , making FFVII Crisis Core a joy to listen to .
Not only does the medicine vocalise good , but it also has great cue and flows . This is especially noticed in the cutscene with Sephiroth , Angeal , and Genesis . The transition from The Price of Freedom , build up up , and end with One - wing saint when Sephiroth gets serious is truly a masterpiece . There is a cause that Final Fantasy VII ’s music is iconic and timeless , and Crisis Core Final Fantasy VII Reunion puts this on display throughout the entire game .
Verdict – A shadow of a great experience
Crisis Core is a game I remember fondly , but sadly the Crisis Core Final Fantasy VII Reunion does little to go past a plot released in 2007 . This splendid chapter in the Final Fantasy VII timeline strike all the fib beat and does everything right , except for enhance the gameplay and bringing it to modern standards . Outside of nostalgia and wanting to see one of the best stories in JRPG history brought to HD living , Crisis Core Final Fantasy VII Reunion may be hard to keep one’s shoulder to the wheel through for those not concerned in Zack ’s story and how it relates to Cloud ’s in Final Fantasy VII .
